Perception is not always reality. According to a Kellogg Foundation study: Perceptions of Rural America respondents of the survey "perceive rural America as being based on an almost completely agricultural economy.
In reality, farm employment is only 7 percent of all rural employment. Adding .8 percent for processing and marketing jobs, the total is still 11.7 percent for all agriculture related jobs in rural America.
Television News Isn't Always "Fair and Balanced". The Pew Research Center reports that television news coverage appears to influence voting, with viewers of Fox News almost three time more likely to vote for a conservative candidate than viewers of CNN. Perspective on Rural America
We started My Rural America because we recognized the news gap in rural America. So? What's the news gap, you may ask?
The answer to this question is central to My Rural America's mission: To share the news while assisting rural citizens learn what legislation originating in Washington, D.C. means to the daily lives and kitchen tables of the 20 percent of U.S. population that lives and works both on-farm and off-farm in rural America.
Our issues:
-- Jobs and the Economy, including Farm Bill.
-- Health Care, e.g., State Children's Health Insurance Program (about 1/3 of rural children subscribe) and Farm Bill (68% nutrition).
-- Education ... 40% of America's children go to schools in rural America but these schools only get about 24% of the federal dollar.
-- "Coming Home" issues for Veterans: 60% of our soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan come from rural America, but remember ... our rural population as a whole is only about 20% of the country.
